AATCC is headquartered in Research Triangle Park, N.C., USA, providing test method development, quality control materials, and professional networking for thousands of members in 60 countries throughout the world.

ASTM International

Textile Standards ASTM International is one of the largest voluntary standards development organizations in the world-a trusted source for technical standards for materials, products, systems, and services. Known for their high technical quality and market relevancy, ASTM International standards have an important role in the information infrastructure that guides design, manufacturing and trade in the global economy. Committee D13 ASTM Committee D13 on Textiles was formed in 1914. D13 meets twice a year, in January and June, with approximately 100 members attending three days of technical meetings. The Committee has 535 members and currently has jurisdiction of 339 standards, published in the Annual Book of ASTM Standards, Volumes 7.01 and 7.02.

U.S. Textile and Apparel Import Stats for 2009 Show Declines in Volume and Dollar Amount

Data released by the U.S. Department of Commerce show

Total U.S. imports of textile and apparel products in 2009 were equal to 46.6 billion meters, down 7.5 percent from 2008. Shipments were valued at $81 billion, down 13 percent from 2008.

  • Apparel shipments in 2009 totaled 21.3 billion - square meter equivalents (sme), down 6 percent from 2008. Apparel shipments were valued at $63.1 billion, down 11.8 percent from 2008.
  • Yarn shipments in 2009 totaled 2.4 billion sme, down 18.4 percent from 2008. Yarn shipments were valued at $1.1 billion, down 18 percent from 2008.
  • Fabric shipments in 2009 totaled 7.4 billion sme, down 5.4 percent from 2008. Fabric shipments were valued at $3.9 billion, down 24.1 percent from 2008.
  • Shipments of "made ups" (linens, curtains, and such) totaled 15.5 billon sme, down 8.5 percent from 2008. Shipments of made ups were valued at $12.9 billion, down 14.8 percent from 2008.
